Forget about me?
The past year brought a slew of new games that really wowed the world, and here are the 10 that really stood out
the most. These are the 10 Best Games of 2011. *Note: This is not to be confused with the Epic Game of the Year Award nominations.
10 – Rayman Origins
Rayman Origins brought a lot that
other games just didn’t this year. It’s a 2D platforming side-scroller, much
unlike Rayman’s previous outings. But the game looks and plays beautifully.
UbiArt originally intended for this underdog release to be a series of
downloadable games, but eventually opted out and good thing they did. Rayman
Origins is a perfect example of how a next-gen side scroller should play out.
9 - Saints Row The Third
Saints Row 3 brings a lot to the
table in this cutting edge sequel. There is so much to it. There’s a plethora
of weapons and vehicles to choose from, insane outfits for your character and
so much land to tread. It takes the city setting of the Grand Theft Auto series
and amps it up to 12 with its just flat-out insanity. A great release some may
have looked over.
8 – Super Mario 3D Land
The good ol’ Italian plumber’s
debut on the Nintendo 3DS is really a great game to play. The controls of it
are ever so smooth, and feel very much atone to Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii.
The gameplay is just perfect, feeling like a combination of Galaxy and 64. The
graphics are also very well done for the Nintendo 3DS and are actually on par
with the Wii’s. Also, Mario 3D Land keeps you coming back to try and grab every
last thing in it.
7 – Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat’s re-imagining for
the next –gen consoles really is a phenomenal experience. It brings back what
fans used to know, and gives them much more. The game is very smooth to play,
and feels individual compared to other fighting games now (Tekken, Street
Fighter…) Mortal Kombat also added in a lot of modes, adding to the replay
factor of it. I guess you could say Mortal Kombat is just plain ol’ “puts on
sunglasses” BLOODY fun!
6 – Dead Space 2
Issack Clarke is back, and is ready
to blow the limbs off of some necromorphs! This sequel to 2008’s Dead Space
really went above and beyond expectations. It brought back all of the scares
from the first entry and added upon that. Throw in some new weapons, and better
graphics and you have an excellent game here. Dead Space 2 has raised the bar
for survival horror games.
5 - Battlefield 3
Battlefield comes roaring back to
consoles with the third entry in the series. Kicking in to style with the all
new Frostbite 2 engine. Never has war felt so real. The graphics of Battlefield
3 are simply bliss, and it adds to the level of realism in the game. Also, the
audio in Battlefield 3 sounds beautiful with every little scratch of gravel to
every gunshot fire. The online in Battlefield 3 really makes the game. With
over tons of unlockable guns, upgrades, and medals, there is too much to do.
Not many first person shooters can compare with Battlefield 3.
Here’s Sacky! That’s right; the boy
made of burlap makes his second foray in to gaming one like no other.
Everything about this game moves fluidly. The graphics, the sounds and the
controls all go one in one and work perfectly. Also, LittleBigPlanet 2 has one
thing most games don’t. Pure innovation. This game has really shown MUCH more
than it’s predeseccor . You aren’t limited to sim
3 – Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls make their latest
adventure in to the game world like no other. Skyrim is the PERFECT fantasy
game. The only limit to what you can do is your imagination. There’s everything
from fighting dragons to casting spells. The graphics are also top notch for a world
as vast as Skyrim. Skyrim limits you to
no boundaries and that’s why it really shines out in 2011.
2 – Legend of Zelda : Skyward Sword
Link returns to the Nintendo Wii
after a 5 year vacation, and he has VASTLY improved since then. The Legend of
Zelda makes it’s valiant return as it brings a whole new tale. The story in
Skyward Sword is really amazing, along with the rest of the game. The graphics
have a really interesting style to them, a mesh of Wind Waker and Twilight
Princess. One more noteworthy thing would have to be the controls, that are
highly impressive for even a Wii game. Just the typical from Master Miyamoto.
1 – Uncharted 3: Drakes’ Deception
There’s too much to say about Drake’s Deception. It is a true accomplishment in the gaming world. It isn’t just a game, just a story, just a win-lose situation. It’s an experience, and an amazing one at that. Uncharted 3 is an all around great game, and I’m happy to have had the joy of playing it. A true immersive experience.
